The following section provides a detail and meaningful overview of the most prominent demographic indicators relevant for planning, budgeting, research and other purposes. It is contended that the population statistics provided here will assist to set accurate and credible service delivery targets.
The data used in this article were drawn from a special tabulation compiled by CSA /Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia/. The information was collected by CSA as part of the 1999E.C Housing and Population census, and then the current data is projected /estimated/ by using the growth rate of the City provided by the Central Statistics Authority.
Much of the population growth in Hawassa has been the result of internal migration and expansion of educational and other facilities, also widening of the city’s boundaries has caused some of the increase.
According to projections of the central statistics authority of Ethiopia, Hawassa’s population is estimated to be 436,992 in 2012E.C. The City’s population gender breakdown will be relatively evenly split between male (224,907 /51.4 %/) and female (212,085 /48.6% /). Out of the total number of the Population of the city administration 292,525 people live in urban area, while the remaining 144,467 peoples live in the rural area of the administration.
Hawassa has a young population. Around 65% of the people are under 25 years of age, and only about 5.5% of the population is over 50 years of age. The annual population growth rate 4.02. 4.8% growth rate in urban and 2.8% growth rate in rural areas of the city.
